The cleats help to grip the ground, allowing players to change direction quickly and without getting injured. Especially on wet, slippery grass, changing direction quickly is extremely difficult when you do not have shoes that can grip the ground well. Individual skill, speed, conditioning, and what I call your soccer I.Q. which is the ability to out think people on the field are just a few aspects of overall soccer training. You must also understand exactly where you need to be, where your teammates should be and where the ball needs to go. Great players have great soccer I.Q.’s and that doesn’t happen by accident. It comes through practice, understanding, and most importantly great guidance from a knowledgeable coach.

Soccer cleats should fit your foot snugly. There should be less than a finger’s width of space between the tip of your soccer shoe and your toes. Cleats are not a shoe that you buy to grow in to. It is important, both for optimized performance in the game and your safety, that you always wear cleats that fit you snugly. You will perform better in tight-fighting cleats, and will also be less likely to injure yourself during a game. Some older players prefer clears made from kangaroo leather. Kangaroo leather stretches once it is worn and then molds specially to fit the wearer’s foot shape.
